FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What’s the schedule for Sat and Sun? On Saturday, if we have 8 teams, we will have 8 games starting 10am, 1 hour each (last tipoff 5p). If there are 6 teams, then 6 games. On Sunday, we plan to have our last 3 games (3rd Place, Consolation, and Championship) start at 12p, 1p, 2p.
Why 8-team consolation format only? There’s a lot going on this NBA All-Star Weekend. Since we are all probably gonna go check the All-Star festivities out, we don’t really have the time run the usual full-fledged Pool Play format.
What is a Consolation Bracket? Just like those high school tournaments you used to play in where they invite 8 total teams and 8 only. You win the first game, you go to the right and play the other winners for the eventual championship. You lose the first game, you play for the Consolation and there is no way to win the championship anymore. Unfortunately that’s just how it goes. Incidentally, a lot of the old-school Japanese League tournaments in California are still this way. If you are dying to play Pool Play format, check out our other tournaments (upper right-hand menu under TOURNAMENTS).
What if you don’t get 8 teams? First of all, since we are running this in conjunction with our friends at PacRim, which has a large base of teams playing in its league, we are quite confident we’ll get 8 teams. But if we only get 6 teams, then we will have a 6-team tourney with two pools of 3 teams, round-robin for two games, then the winner of each pool plays for the championship, the 2nd-place in each pool for 3rd Place, and the last-place in each pool for 5th Place.
What if you get more than 8 teams? We will take the first 8 teams that pay at least the deposit. We will not have more than 8 teams unless by some miracle we open up an additional 6- or 8-team bracket whereby 14 (8+6) or 16 (8+8) signed up and paid.
What are the prizes? We plan to give a team trophy to the winner and only the championship team gets 8 championship t-shirtsAs you can see by the low team entry fee (typical tournaments are upwards of $375 or $500-600 in Vegas), we are running this as a low-budget tournament. However, if I do have extra funds left over, I may try to get everyone t-shirts — in the past, I have been able to run a Consolation bracket for as low as $240/team, but that was in my hometown of SF where I have access to affordable gyms. This reduction in team entry fee is not guaranteed, however, and depends on our gym/ref/scorekeeper arrangements. Meantime, I’ll also try to get some discounted All-Star Jam tickets.
