Retention/Thank You based on 2011 NBA Draft Lottery!

TUE 5/17/2011 (2:30PM) — It took me almost two hours, but I managed to figure out how the Dream League Retention/Thank You Raffle would be represented by the 14 NBA Lottery teams. Please note, in these partitions I took into account where in the playoff bracket you finished (the further you went in the playoff bracket, the “stronger” team you were), your W-L record (of course), what division you played in, how long you’ve been a Dream League captain, and in the case of the champions, whether or not I felt the team had did some sandbagging.

Scroll down below the table to see what this is all about!…

TUE 5/17/2011 (12:45PM) — I am pleased to announce on our website Dream League’s first-ever Retention and Thank You program based on the actual results of the NBA Draft Lottery!

PLEASE CHECK BACK SOON, as I will be posting the 63 returning Dream League captains and the NBA teams that will represent them in the Draft Lottery tonight.

The following was emailed to all captains this 2011 Spring-Summer season (looks like we have 144 teams!)…

In an effort to encourage you to come back as a captain — and as a way of saying thank you to those who have already — we are pleased to announce the following new “captain retention and thank you” program.

For every THIRD consecutive season in which you are the captain of a team, i.e., the one who takes responsibility as the Commish’s single point of contact for all issues related to your team (not an easy role, as I’m sure you’d agree)…

- You earn one coupon good for $50 off the purchase of uniforms, as described at http://www.drmlg.org/bay/gear/jerseys-uniforms/ (minimum 8 pcs)

…and for every SINGLE consecutive season in which you come back with a team…

- You earn a special NBA Draft Lottery raffle ticket good for winning a “jackpot” of $1 per team that played in Dream League the previous season

THEREFORE…

(a) If you are already a captain from last season who has re-entered his team this season, you need do nothing further. You are automatically in the program.

(b) If you were a captain last season and now motivated to re-enter as captain this season for the reasons above, please contact your players now and register your team!

(c) If you were a captain last season and still do not wish to or cannot enter a team this season, there is no pressure. It is perfectly okay to not participate in this program.

EXCEPTIONS/RULES:
1. This program is applicable to single captains ONLY. If your team switched captains, then the new captain starts all over. It is the only way for us to keep track.

2. If you received a discount to play in the league, you are not eligible (i.e., you should be happy you already got a discount, for whatever reason — you already won!).

3. This is for teams that paid full price, either via advance lump sum entry fee payment, installment plan, or scorekeeping (fully scorekept 100%).

4. This program can be terminated at any time in the future (in case we feel that this is not working out for the league office).

WHY ONLY CAPTAINS (AND NOT TEAMS): It just gets way too complicated for us to keep track if you have the same team, but change captains. Then we would have to go into more rules as to what constitutes a returning team, etc. Really the focus of this is the captain, not the player. The captains have the most responsibilities to adhere to and take care of. The captains are the Commish’s direct point of contact, our special liaisons to the teams. Therefore, this is by captain only. If you transfer your duties of captain to another person on your team, you are no longer eligible for this program, and the new captain starts over when counting how many times his name has registered a team. IT FOLLOWS THAT ANY CAPTAIN CAN REGISTER ANY TEAM AND HAVE THAT TEAM PAID FOR — THE TEAM CAN BE AN ENTIRELY NEW TEAM AS LONG AS THE CAPTAIN IS THE SAME PERSON.

DETAILS ABOUT THE $50 COUPON: After you have paid for your 3rd consecutive team in which you are the designated captain, and you want to order jerseys or uniforms, you are entitled to one $50 off coupon for your order. Per our established vendor arrangement, you must purchase at least 8 top jerseys or full uniforms. The coupon may NOT be used in conjunction with any previous coupon, nor the special $750 (SF/OAK) and $800 (SJ) jersey bundles, as those bundles are already discounted and Dream League is simply not in the position to take a net loss on any given jersey/uniform order. Therefore, if you were the captain of teams in six consecutive seasons and you have not already used your $50 coupon, you can only get $50 off the next order; you cannot get $100 off the next order, as Dream League is not in the position to take a loss on any given order.

DETAILS ABOUT THE RAFFLE: The requirement for being a captain for three consecutive seasons pertains only to the $50 jersey/uniform coupon. ALL RETURNING CAPTAINS WHO OTHERWISE PAID FULL PRICE AND DID NOT RECEIVE A DISCOUNT (SEE EXCEPTIONS/RULES ABOVE) ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE RAFFLE. For every team that played in the last season, Dream League will contribute $1 to the “jackpot”. So, if there were 121 teams, the jackpot would be worth $121. The winner will be chosen using an exciting new format: the NBA Draft Lottery system, which is detailed in the next paragraph.

DETAILS ABOUT THE NBA DRAFT LOTTERY SYSTEM USED TO SELECT THE WINNER OF THE RAFFLE: We will adopt the NBA’s Draft Lottery system to determine the winner of the raffle, as laid out in the previous paragraph. In the NBA, fourteen (14) teams enter a lottery system, with the worst teams given the best chances to win the lottery for the #1 Draft Pick. In Dream League, we will take the number of returning captains and assign them to each of the fourteen teams. For example, if there are 84 returning captains, 6 captains (6 x 14 = 84) will be assigned to each of the NBA’s fourteen lottery teams. If there are 85 returning captains, then we will distribute the 85th captain as best as we see fit (i.e., “close enough”), as there is a remainder of teams after dividing by the 14 slots available. We will select which Dream League captains represent which NBA team in a similar fashion to the NBA itself: by the results their Dream League team from the previous season. Therefore, if your team went 0-8 in the previous season and you are a returning captain, then you will most likely be represented by the Minnesota Timberwolves for the 2011 NBA Draft Lottery (as Minnesota had the worst record and best chances of winning the #1 Draft Pick), and so on and so forth. In our example, 6 of the 84 returning captains would be represented by Minnesota. If Minnesota wins the NBA Draft Lottery, then we have 6 preliminary winners. At that point, we will do a random drawing between the 6 Dream League captains represented by the Timberwolves, to determine the overall winner of the jackpot. In short, the real NBA Draft Lottery will help whittle our field of returning captains down to a manageable group. The winner will be decided by random drawing of this manageable group.

IF YOU ARE THE CAPTAIN OF TWO TEAMS THIS PAST SEASON, you must return both teams this season. It is one entry per captain per team. It follows that if you were the captain of two teams last season and return both teams, then obviously you will get two entries into the above “raffle”.

IF YOU HAVE PLAYED IN THREE CONSECUTIVE SEASONS IN THE PAST, you can email me to get your $50 off uniforms, but unless you signup another team this season, you will not be eligible for the raffle. The raffle is for the new season only. We do not have the resources to go back into previous seasons and include captains from many years ago into the NBA Draft Lottery raffle, who are no longer captains this season.

IF YOU WERE NOT PLANNING TO ENTER A TEAM THIS SEASON BUT NOW WANT TO, we will give you until 5/8 to submit a minimum down payment of $120 to play in the league. At that point, you can email us to arrange a fair payment plan, whether that means the entire installment plan or an immediate payment of the full entry fee remainder. Your team will therefore have to start on 5/15 and either play a doubleheader or play on Fathers Day to catch up. Unfortunately, it simply took this long for me to find an agreeable “retention/thank you program”. I apologize for the short notice.

Well, I hope that made sense. Without too much analysis, we can probably agree that due to the odds of the NBA Lottery, champions of Dream League divisions who return mathematically have a lesser chance of winning the jackpot. I do realize that, but that is a conscious decision I have made. I’d rather have it that way than a boring straight drawing. So if your team “sucked”, here is my way of leveling the playing field. And besides that, completely random drawings of equal chances are actually difficult to administer and can draw a lot of scrutiny — that’s the last thing I want to add to my plate. Mimicking the NBA Draft Lottery gives you something to root for (other than the Warriors) when you watch it on TV, and for me, the hard work is done by the NBA. Doing it this way is more fun. And you still get the $50 off uniforms every 3 consecutive seasons anyways.

Incidentally, the real NBA Draft Lottery will be held on Tue 5/17. Dream League will obviously assign each returning captain to an NBA Lottery team by Mon 5/16, probably earlier. By then, all registrations will probably be in.
